    Last year I took a class at the Fort Ticonderoga Historical Center offsite from their museum where we got to handle and examine original Brown Bess muskets and a couple of them had metal that was pinned to the frizzens to repair them and get them back in service again. In those days it wasn't just as easy to just take off the frizzen and have a blacksmith work on it so it was interesting to see how field repairs were done back in the day to keep the guns serviceable.

    Why put those resistors and waste so much power? You could just use 6V power supply and with 1.5 ohms you'd get 4A current, so with the same current you'd get the same temperature of wire, just with 24W of power, while now 3/4 energy is just wasted on resistors. And would be much easier to get much smaller power supply even.

      There is a power supply video to go with this.

    • @wnekuu
      @wnekuu Месяц назад

      @@SwallowForge but you can just use any other power supply, getting 25W at 6V is not that challenging. Something like step down with XL4015 that costs here like 3-5usd can handle 5A and up to 75W in theory so 25W should be well within it's capacities and can go down from 24V and you can precisely set output current and voltage. Besides with 26AWG wire you need like 2.6A for optimal temp, I was testing yesterday mine and it was cutting nice between 2 and 3A so no need for that high current anyway. And you're not making room heater unnecessary.

    I have to cut some 4 inch thick 30h high density foam strips about 4 inch wide of a 2ft x 2ft squ section to glue onto the other square peices as the new ones are just a bit small so building this cutter will help in doing the job instead of buying one for a one of job. • @growleym504

      The compass could be rotated to compensate for Variation, often confusingly referred to as declination, (declination is also an astronomical and celestial navigation term of considerable importance) and either adjustable for changing location, or fixed, for one local area. If you look at a navigational chart, next to or within the compass rose the nominal Variation should be given as well as the annual change in Variation, for correction of the given Variation which is correct only for the year of publication of the chart. As it so happens, where I live, the Variation is rather small. 1°25' W, which in this sort of extremely crude and inaccurate sundial can be ignored as insignificant. In some other locations within the continental US, it can be over 16° and therefore would definitely benefit from correction, by simply rotating the compass relative to the device the appropriate amount and direction. Make no mistake, when all relevant adjustments are permitted or implemented, and the device is of reasonable size and accurately constructed, a sundial can easily determine time within a minute or two, and also the date. A pocket sundial is, even if carefully constructed, more of a conversation piece than a timepiece. One could well be forgiven for using magnetic North rather than True North, for orienting this sort of sundial.

    Superb woodworking. The electrical principles though… well… When I make one I’ll use this MDF plan, it’s superb. But I’ll constantan wire for higher resistance and a smaller, cheaper power supply. I won’t rely on a cold resistance measurement. Instead I’ll measure current and voltage when operating and calculate resistance. What you have there is something like a 12W wire cutter with a 40W heater underneath.
